Corporate Incentives - Are they really worth it?

Despite the recent Global recession and cut backs in corporate spending in some areas, it would be easy to think that staff motivation would not be a priority. However, now would be a good time to re-enforce the importance of motivational and incentive programmes to your employees to improve staff morale and get the best out of your workforce.

A trip abroad is often seen as the most appealing to employees, more so than staying at home. Choosing new destinations, exciting and interesting programmes and excellent accommodation is virtually always going to appeal to your workforce and inspire them to reach their targets. Opportunities that they are unlikely to choose themselves for a private holiday or break are bound to impress the workforce. Once they have experienced these rewards, it is likely that they will want to do so year after year, ensuring you get the best out of them. Work colleagues will start to discuss the programme and envisage enjoying the rewards, thereby creating a desire to be on the plane.

This raises an important question: What makes a good incentive programme?

There are 2 main factors to consider:

1 - What do you want your employees to achieve? All incentive programmes must be realistic and achieveable for everybody that is taking part. Setting higher targets is one thing, however making them unrealistic will have a detrimental affect on the entire programme. You want your employees to feel that they can reach these targets - without making it too easy for them! Participation rules must be clear and carefully considered before announcing the programme. If you are not sure, check with your company's Legal and HR teams first.

2 - What is in it for them? Think about your employee profile - are they young, middle aged, adventurous, cultural, creative etc? The reward should be in proportion to what they are being asked to achieve. Can they bring partners along? Do they need to pay for any extra activities, transfers or meals? Does the location have a 'Wow' factor? How soon after the qualifying period ends, will the programme take place - ideally within 3-6 months? What are the tax implications? Asking them to be liable for any potential additional tax could have the opposite affect.

We have helped one of our clients arrange accommodation in the USA for their annual sales incentive trip for 4 years running. They have stayed in 5 star luxury hotels (Ritz Carlton Naples, Ritz Carlton Palm Beach, St Regis Monarch Beach and the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale) and other than a welcome dinner, attendees are left to spend the 3 nights as they please with their partners. Flights to and from the destination, accommodation, plus some 'spending money' is also included in the programme. Our client estimates that the Return on Investment far outweighs the cost of the programme - estimated at close to $250,000 US altogether! There is a sense of anticipation every October when the following year's destination is announced at one of their sales meetings.

There are many more factors involved in creating and running a succesful Incentive reward programme. Regular communication and progress updates are essential to keep everybody interested in the reward, but also to maintain their focus on what they are trying to achieve. After all, the ultimate goal of any incentive programme is to improve performance through increased profits, greater market share or any other measuring yardstick.

What gets measured gets done; reward to leads to repetition.
